And if the ceiling and walls are clear, not everyone knows how to repair the floor in the house. For a home to be not only beautiful but also safe, all repair work must be done with a particular responsibility. Also, repairing floors is a great excuse to warm them up.

How To Repair A Floor In A Wooden House

First of all, the repair of the floor should be started by removing the old flooring. Parquet, linoleum and other types of floors will have to rip and examine the floorboards. Usually, if the house is old, they imply a complete replacement, which means that they too should be removed.

After all the work on dismantling old building materials and cleaning rooms from debris, you can start dismantling the new floor.

If the foundation of the house has deteriorated from the dampness coming from the basement, it must be thoroughly plastered and brought back to normal appearance before you start laying the floor. Basic materials that are required when repairing a floor in a wooden house:

  • insulating material, roll or sheet;
  • dry bar 200×200 mm;
  • the floorboard
  • various fastening elements, including assembly foam and self-tapping screws;
  • antiseptic impregnations.

Once you have determined the location of the boards, you can begin to install a bar that has been previously soaked in antiseptic, which will act as the basis for the new floor. In this case, the step of laying lags directly depends on the thickness of the boards: if you use a board thickness of 40 mm, the flooring should be installed in steps not exceeding 850 mm. If thicker boards are used, the pitch increases to 1 m and decreases accordingly if the board is less than 35 mm thick.

The lags are set exactly at the level. In places where the bar needs to be raised, it is worth using plywood gaskets, which are soaked in hot olive – it works perfectly on compression and does not allow shrinkage. Such gaskets are screwed to the lags to prevent their fall out and subsequent subsidence of the floor. Spacers and wedges should never be used instead of gaskets – they can shrink and fall out of the seats, which will lead to creaking and floor subsidence.

If the floor is being repaired on the ground floor or in a private house and there is a basement underneath, this must be taken into account before installing the lags. Therefore, place thermal insulation material between the lags. After fixing all components of the floor base, proceed to install the insulation material.

Floor Thermal Insulation

Choose a heater should be based on the climatic conditions in which the apartment or house. If the floor is renovated in a private house or apartment is on the 1st floor, it is necessary to treat this issue even more responsibly. The quality of the heater directly depends on the comfort of the owners of the home in winter.

To choose the material that would be ideal for your living conditions, it is recommended to consult with specialists working in construction stores and buy the appropriate insulation. This can be mineral wool, polystyrene foam, penoisol, ecowata, and others.

A sheet or roll material is placed between the lags. Empties and crevices must not be left behind to prevent cold air from entering the cellar. If you use 200 mm high lags, it is recommended to use stone wool sheet insulation, but if the height is lower, it is better to consider the option with roll-fed insulation, laid in one or more layers.

When installing floor thermal insulation, you should follow one rule – so that the top board does not touch this material at all, leave a small air layer between them. In case of constant dampness in the basement penetrating through the concrete slabs, it is worth applying the waterproofing before installing the insulation. This is a necessary measure, as all insulation materials do not tolerate high humidity and accumulate moisture in themselves, thus increasing the probability of rotting wood and destroying it.

Naturally, this does not apply to polystyrene foam and certain types of synthetic insulators, but in the vast majority of cases, waterproofing is not required.

Installation Of Wooden Floor

After the insulating material is installed, the wooden floor must be installed. Today, a material such as a lining has proven itself excellently. Thanks to special grooves and spikes, the installation of the wooden floor will be quick. In addition, at the bottom of the board is a ventilation groove that allows the wood to “breathe”.

The board is fixed to the lags with self-tapping screws, but at the same time, you need to make sure that there are no gaps between the joints. There should not be any gaps in the quality of the installed floor. The self-tapping screws are screwed in such a way that they are not visible and their heads do not show up on the appearance of the floor.

After fixing the last board it is necessary to start the further operation, based on the preferences of the hosts. For example, if the owners of the apartment prefer laminate or parquet board, on the floor fasten special waterproof plywood (10-15 mm thick), bolting it to the boards. It is worth remembering that between the sheets should remain small gaps, otherwise there will be friction and squeaking. Then on the plywood is laid parquet or laminate.

Laminate differs perfectly smooth surface and does not need further processing, and in case of laying the parquet or laminate should resort to a few more repair measures.

Floor Cycling In The House

In order to remove all differences in the height of the parquet or planks and to perfectly level the floor, a cycle machine is used to remove the top layer of wood, removing the irregularities created during the installation of the floor and possible dirt. If there are deep dents and scratches on the boards, it is worthwhile to perform coarse cycling using coarse-grained sandpaper and then finer sandpaper in order to achieve a perfectly even floor surface.

After cycling the floor and removing dust and debris, you can cover the wood with a special lacquer, which will not only give the surface a mirror shine, but also protect the floor from minor damage and dirt.

Now you know how to repair the floor in the house, and how hard work it is, which requires certain construction skills. However, for a home foreman who is familiar with locksmith and carpentry tools, such work will not be difficult, and the repair will be excellent!
